A plain-English look at EFT

What Is Emotionally Focused Therapy?

Emotionally Focused Therapy, often shortened to EFT, is a model for understanding how partners seek safety and connection with each other. It looks beneath the topic of a fight to the fear, longing, and protective moves that keep the same cycle going.

The relationship pattern is the problem

EFT does not begin by deciding that one partner is too emotional and the other is too distant. It looks at the loop between them. One may push for an answer, the other may shut down, and each response makes the next more likely.

Seeing the loop changes the question from who started it to what happens to both of you when connection feels threatened.

Attachment in ordinary language

Attachment means that close relationships matter to our sense of safety. Adults still need to know that an important partner is available, responsive, and emotionally present. Conflict often becomes intense when that security feels uncertain.

A sharp complaint may carry the question, do I matter to you. Silence may protect against the fear of getting it wrong again. EFT helps couples hear those deeper messages.

Emotion is information

The model treats emotion as useful information rather than something to eliminate. Anger, panic, numbness, and defensiveness can point toward more vulnerable experiences that are harder to say directly.

The aim is not to make every conversation highly emotional. It is to help partners understand what drives their reactions so they have more choice in how they respond.

How John relates to EFT

John's work is attachment-based and informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy, with narrative therapy and practical tools. He does not claim EFT certification or present himself as a certified EFT therapist.

That means EFT helps shape how he listens for cycles, emotional needs, and moments of connection. It is part of his approach, not a credential he does not hold.

What a session actually looks like

You meet together for 50 minutes by telehealth while both partners are physically in Texas. John may ask about one recent argument and slow down the moment when the conversation changed.

He helps each partner notice what happened inside, put it into words, and hear the other's experience. When a different response becomes possible in the room, you can practice it rather than only discuss it in theory.

Deciding whether the approach fits

A model matters less than whether both partners feel respected and the work feels useful. The free 30-minute consultation gives you a chance to ask John how his attachment-based, EFT-informed approach would apply to your relationship.

Ongoing sessions are $175 for 50 minutes and private pay. No approach can guarantee an outcome, and John will revisit your goals with you as the work continues.

Common Questions

Is John certified in EFT?

No. John's work is informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy. He does not claim EFT certification, ICEEFT training, or the title of certified EFT therapist.

Is EFT the same as communication training?

No. Communication tools can be useful, but EFT pays particular attention to the emotional and attachment needs underneath a couple's repeated pattern.

How long are sessions and what do they cost?

Sessions are 50 minutes and $175. The first 30-minute consultation is free. John works on a private-pay basis and does not bill insurance directly, though some couples have out-of-network benefits worth asking their plan about.
