When conversations never land

Couples Counseling for Communication Problems

You may talk every day and still feel like nothing important gets through. Communication problems are rarely about vocabulary. Counseling helps you see what happens between you when a conversation starts to slip, and how to stay connected while it does.

Talking past each other

Many couples describe the same experience: one partner raises something, the other responds to a different point, and within minutes both feel misunderstood. One hears a complaint and defends. The other hears the defense and explains again, louder. The original concern gets lost, and both walk away sure the other was not listening.

Neither of you is doing this on purpose. Each is reacting to what the conversation seems to mean. John helps couples slow the exchange down enough to notice where it turns, so the conversation can stay on what actually matters.

Why tips alone rarely stick

Most couples have already tried something: using feeling words, taking turns, waiting until later. Those tools can help, but they tend to disappear the moment either partner feels criticized or dismissed. When the body is braced for a familiar fight, a script is hard to remember and easy to hear as fake.

John's work is attachment-based and EFT-informed. That means looking at the need underneath the words: to matter, to be taken seriously, to feel safe enough to disagree. When those needs are understood, the practical skills have something to hold onto.

What each partner may be protecting

The partner who pushes to keep talking is often protecting against feeling alone or unimportant. The partner who deflects, jokes, or goes quiet is often protecting against feeling like a failure or against a conflict that seems impossible to win. Both strategies make sense from the inside. Together, they create a loop.

In the room, John helps each of you put words to that protection. It is often a relief to hear that your partner's frustration is not contempt, or that their silence is not indifference.

What changes when you feel heard

As couples practice, conversations tend to get shorter and clearer. You may notice the moment the exchange turns and be able to say so before it runs away. You may be able to ask what your partner meant instead of assuming. Disagreements still happen, but they end with more understanding and less residue.

No counselor can guarantee an outcome. Progress depends on both partners' willingness to try something unfamiliar. John checks in regularly about whether the work feels useful.

What a session actually looks like

Sessions are 50 minutes by telehealth, and you attend together from somewhere in Texas. John usually starts with a recent conversation that went sideways, something small and real, like a question about the weekend that turned into an argument about effort.

He will walk through it with you slowly. What did you mean to say? What did you hear? What happened in your body when the tone changed? He may ask one partner to say something again, more directly, and help the other respond to what was meant. The goal is to experience a different version of the conversation while you are both there.

You will usually leave with one small practice, such as naming when you feel misheard or checking your understanding before responding. It is meant to fit into ordinary life rather than become another chore.

A place to start

The free 30-minute consultation gives both of you a chance to meet John and ask how he works. It is especially helpful when one partner is hopeful and the other is tired of talking about talking.

Sessions are $175 for 50 minutes, private pay, held by telehealth while both partners are in Texas.

Common Questions

Is this just a communication skills class?

No. Skills are part of it, but the focus is on what happens between the two of you emotionally when a conversation turns. That is what makes skills usable when it counts.

What if one of us is much better with words?

That is common. John slows things down so the quieter partner has room, and he helps the more verbal partner notice when explaining more is not landing. Being articulate is not the same as being understood.

How long are sessions and what do they cost?

Sessions are 50 minutes and $175. The first 30-minute consultation is free. John works on a private-pay basis and does not bill insurance directly, though some couples have out-of-network benefits worth asking their plan about.
