Closeness, desire, and connection

Couples Counseling for Intimacy and Desire Differences

Differences in desire are among the most common challenges couples face, and among the hardest to talk about. Counseling offers a respectful, non-explicit place to understand the pattern between you and rebuild closeness at a pace that feels safe for both.

When desire does not match

It is normal for partners to want closeness in different amounts or different ways. The difficulty is usually not the difference itself but what it comes to mean. One partner may start to feel unwanted. The other may feel pressured or like they are always disappointing someone.

John helps couples talk about this without blame, treating the difference as something to understand rather than a problem located in one person.

The initiation and rejection cycle

A familiar loop can form. One partner reaches out and is turned down, then reaches out less, or with more frustration. The other partner begins to anticipate the request and pulls back from affection in general, worried that any touch will be read as an invitation. Both end up lonelier.

In counseling, John helps you see that cycle clearly. Often each partner is trying to protect something: one from rejection, the other from pressure. Naming that together can ease the tension.

Closeness beyond sex

When physical intimacy becomes a source of tension, other kinds of closeness often fade too: hugs, lingering conversations, playful moments. Rebuilding those can matter as much as anything else. Many couples find that feeling emotionally safe and seen makes other kinds of connection more possible.

Conversations in session stay respectful and non-explicit. John focuses on the emotional side of intimacy, such as feeling wanted, safe, and free to say no.

What John does and does not do

John is not a sex therapist and does not provide medical treatment. If a physical or medical concern seems to be part of the picture, a medical provider is the right place for that part of the conversation. His focus is the relationship: how you talk about closeness, how you handle disappointment, and how you stay connected.

No counselor can guarantee an outcome. What couples often notice is less pressure, fewer painful standoffs, and more ease in being close.

What a session actually looks like

Sessions are 50 minutes, together, by telehealth while you are both located in Texas. Many couples are nervous at first, and John goes at a pace that keeps both partners comfortable. He may start by asking what closeness looked like earlier in the relationship and what has changed.

When the topic feels charged, John slows down and helps each partner describe what a recent moment of reaching or pulling away felt like from the inside. He checks that the other partner understood before moving on. Nobody is pushed to share more than they are ready to.

You may leave with something small, such as a way to offer affection without expectation, or a gentler way to say not tonight that still communicates care.

Common Questions

Will we have to talk about explicit details?

No. Conversations stay respectful and non-explicit. The focus is on the emotional experience of closeness, reaching, and pulling away.

Is John a sex therapist?

No. John is an LMFT Associate who works with couples on the relationship side of intimacy. For medical concerns, a medical provider is the right resource.

How long are sessions and what do they cost?

Sessions are 50 minutes and $175. The first 30-minute consultation is free. John works on a private-pay basis and does not bill insurance directly, though some couples have out-of-network benefits worth asking their plan about.
