Premarital Counseling for Couples

Most engaged couples spend months planning a wedding and very little time talking about the marriage. Premarital counseling gives the two of you space to say out loud what you each assume married life will be, while those conversations are still easy to have.

What you each assume marriage means

Everyone arrives at marriage with a picture already formed, usually borrowed from the families they grew up in. Who handles the money, how close to live to family, what a normal Sunday looks like, how often you talk when something is wrong. Many of those assumptions are never spoken because they feel obvious.

John helps couples bring those pictures into the open. Often the most useful discovery is not a disagreement but a difference neither of you knew existed.

Money, family, and the practical questions

Premarital work covers the topics that tend to cause friction later: spending and saving, debt, careers, whether and when to have children, holidays, and how involved each family will be. The goal is not to settle every question now. It is to learn how the two of you talk about them.

When a topic gets tense in the room, that is useful information. You get to practice handling it together before the stakes are higher.

Understanding your conflict style

Every couple has a pattern for disagreement. One partner may want to talk it through immediately while the other needs time. One may raise their voice while the other goes quiet. Neither style is wrong, but together they can form a loop that repeats for years.

John helps you name your pattern early, understand what each of you is protecting, and learn how to repair after a hard conversation.

A foundation, not a guarantee

Premarital counseling is a way to start marriage with more understanding and better tools. No counselor can guarantee an outcome, and this work is not a test you pass or fail.

Couples who are already confident often find it just as valuable as couples who have a few worries. John does not offer a certificate or participate in any state premarital program; this is counseling focused on your relationship.

What a session actually looks like

Sessions are 50 minutes, together, by telehealth while both of you are physically in Texas. John usually picks up one topic per session, such as how you each think about money or what you expect from each other's families, and asks each partner to describe their view.

He listens for the places where assumptions differ and slows the conversation down there. When one of you starts to feel defensive, he helps you say what is underneath instead. You will usually leave with a question to keep talking about at home.

Common Questions

Do we need to have problems to benefit?

No. Premarital counseling is often most useful when things are going well, because conversations are easier before patterns harden.

Does this qualify for a marriage license discount?

No. John does not participate in any state premarital education program. This is couples counseling focused on your relationship.

How long are sessions and what do they cost?

Sessions are 50 minutes and $175. The first 30-minute consultation is free. John works on a private-pay basis and does not bill insurance directly, though some couples have out-of-network benefits worth asking their plan about.
