The first 50 minutes, step by step

Your First Couples Counseling Session

The first session is not a test of your relationship or your ability to explain it. You do not need a shared story, a list of perfect goals, or agreement about who started the problem. John uses the 50 minutes to begin understanding both of you and the pattern that brings you in.

Arriving with different feelings is normal

One partner may feel hopeful while the other feels skeptical, nervous, or tired of trying. John expects that difference and does not treat hesitation as resistance. Both experiences belong in the conversation.

You can say what made the first step difficult. That often tells John something important about how decisions, vulnerability, and hope are handled between you.

What John is likely to ask

John may ask what led you to schedule now, what each of you hopes will be different, and what the relationship was like before the current pattern took hold. He may also ask what you still value about each other.

The questions are not an assessment designed to diagnose either partner. John works with couples only and focuses on the relationship between you.

You do not need to prove your case

It is natural to want John to understand every detail and see why your response makes sense. Trying to present the complete case can quickly recreate the courtroom feeling you already know at home.

John listens for the sequence rather than a verdict. He helps both partners feel accurately understood without deciding who is the better person or whose memory wins.

When the pattern appears in the room

You may disagree during the first session. That is not a failed appointment. A live moment can show John how quickly the cycle moves and what each partner does to protect themselves.

He may slow you down, ask what happened just before the tone changed, or help one of you say the softer concern underneath a sharp response.

What the 50 minutes actually hold

You meet together by telehealth while both partners are physically in Texas. There is time to hear both perspectives, identify an early direction, and begin making sense of the pattern. There may not be time to tell the entire history.

Near the end, John summarizes what he heard, checks whether it fits, and discusses a useful next focus. You may leave with one thing to notice before returning.

After the first meeting

A first session can feel relieving, tiring, hopeful, or unfinished. Give yourselves time before evaluating it in the car or immediately after closing the screen. The question is whether both of you felt respected and whether the direction seemed useful.

Sessions are $175 for 50 minutes, private pay. The initial 30-minute consultation is free, and no counselor can guarantee an outcome.

Common Questions

Do we need to prepare our whole relationship history?

No. Bring what feels most important now. John will help organize the conversation and can learn more over time.

What if we argue in the first session?

That can be useful information. John will slow the exchange and help both partners notice the pattern without shaming either person.

How long are sessions and what do they cost?

Sessions are 50 minutes and $175. The first 30-minute consultation is free. John works on a private-pay basis and does not bill insurance directly, though some couples have out-of-network benefits worth asking their plan about.

Take the Next Step
