The spouse who holds it together

Couples Counseling and Military Spouse Support

Military spouses are often the steady center of the family, holding things together through moves, absences, and uncertainty. That strength can come at a cost to the relationship. This is couples work that gives the spouse's experience a real place in the conversation.

Carrying the home front

While the service member meets the demands of duty, the spouse often carries the household, the children, and the unknowns. Many become remarkably capable. Many also feel unseen.

John helps couples name what the spouse has carried so it can be acknowledged by the person who matters most.

Military spouses are often praised for resilience, and that praise can make it hard to admit exhaustion or loneliness. In session, the spouse does not have to be strong. They can simply describe what the season has been like.

Frequent moves

Each move can mean leaving friends, schools, and routines and rebuilding from scratch. The spouse often does much of that rebuilding. Over time, the repeated starting over can bring grief and fatigue.

In counseling, couples can talk about those costs without turning the conversation into a debate about gratitude or sacrifice.

The service member may feel guilty about what each move costs, and that guilt can come out as defensiveness. John helps both partners hear each other without the conversation becoming a contest.

Career interruption

Many military spouses put careers on hold or start over with each move. That can affect identity, finances, and a sense of fairness in the relationship.

John helps couples talk about what that interruption means and what each partner wants going forward.

Some spouses feel their sense of self has narrowed to supporting someone else's career. Others have made peace with it but still want it acknowledged. Either way, it belongs in the conversation.

Staying partners, not just teammates

Military couples can become excellent at logistics while losing emotional closeness. It is possible to function well and still feel alone.

Couples counseling helps you reconnect as partners. John is a US Navy veteran and understands some of these pressures, while keeping the focus on your relationship. No counselor can guarantee an outcome.

Small rituals can help, such as time each week that is not about logistics, or a way of checking in during duty-heavy seasons that feels personal rather than transactional.

What a session actually looks like

Sessions are 50 minutes together by telehealth, with both partners physically in Texas. John may start with a recent moment when the spouse felt unseen, such as a conversation about an upcoming move or a week when everything fell on one person.

He slows it down and helps both of you understand what that moment held. You will usually leave with one step toward sharing the load differently.

Common Questions

Can the spouse come alone?

No. John works only with couples, so both partners attend sessions together.

Do we need to be near a base?

No. Sessions are by telehealth, as long as both partners are located in Texas during the session.

How long are sessions and what do they cost?

Sessions are 50 minutes and $175. The first 30-minute consultation is free. John works on a private-pay basis and does not bill insurance directly, though some couples have out-of-network benefits worth asking their plan about.
