An honest fit check

Is Couples Counseling Right for Us?

Couples counseling can be useful, but it is not automatically the right answer for every couple or every moment. A good fit depends on what you need, whether both partners can participate, and whether the relationship can be discussed with enough safety and honesty.

Signs couples work may fit

You may be having the same argument, living more like roommates, struggling after a breach of trust, or facing a transition that keeps pulling you apart. The common thread is that the difficulty lives between you and both partners want to understand it.

You do not need to agree on the cause or arrive equally enthusiastic. It is enough for each person to be willing to attend, listen, and look at their part in the pattern.

You do not need a crisis

Some couples wait because their situation does not seem bad enough. Quiet distance, recurring misunderstandings, or difficulty repairing after conflict are valid reasons to begin. Earlier attention can make the pattern easier to see.

Others arrive in deep uncertainty. Counseling can still offer a structured conversation, provided it is not being used to force one partner toward a predetermined outcome.

When it may not be the right time

Ordinary couples sessions may not fit when one partner cannot speak freely or there are immediate safety concerns. A consultation can help clarify next steps, but safety needs to come first.

Couples work also cannot replace individual treatment for a condition that needs its own care, medical support, medication management, assessment, or diagnosis. John works with couples only and does not provide those services.

What John offers

John is an LMFT Associate under supervision. His work is attachment-based and informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy, with narrative therapy and practical tools. He stays active rather than simply watching a couple repeat the same fight.

He does not guarantee an outcome, take sides, provide individual therapy, or tell couples whether to stay together. Fit includes whether that style feels useful to both of you.

What a session actually looks like

Both partners meet with John for 50 minutes by telehealth while physically in Texas. He often starts with one recent interaction and helps you slow it down enough to see what each person felt, assumed, and did next.

John checks whether both partners feel heard and may interrupt escalation. You usually leave with one concrete thing to notice or practice, then return to what actually happened rather than trying to perform progress.

Use the consultation as intended

The free 30-minute consultation is a fit conversation, not a commitment and not a place to disclose detailed clinical information. Ask direct questions about approach, scheduling, and what did not work before.

Sessions are $175 for 50 minutes and private pay. If the fit is not right, knowing that early is useful information rather than a failure.

Common Questions

Do we have to be equally ready?

No. It is common for one partner to be more hopeful or more cautious. Both need enough willingness to attend honestly and consider their part in the relationship pattern.

Does John offer individual therapy first?

No. John works with couples only. If one partner needs individual care instead or alongside couples work, that care would be with another provider.

How long are sessions and what do they cost?

Sessions are 50 minutes and $175. The first 30-minute consultation is free. John works on a private-pay basis and does not bill insurance directly, though some couples have out-of-network benefits worth asking their plan about.

Take the Next Step

If any of this sounds like your relationship, the next step is a free 30-minute consultation. Both of you can meet John, ask what you want to ask, and decide together whether to schedule a first session. You can also call or text 817-381-0691.
